For Tutors

How Old Do You Need to Be to Become a Tutor?

There is no legal minimum age to tutor in the UK. Sixth formers and university students regularly tutor younger students, and it is a legitimate way to earn while studying.

Young tutor

There is no legal minimum age to tutor in the UK. Tutoring is self-employment, not employment — so the standard minimum employment age does not apply. In practice, most tutors start at 16–18, often tutoring younger students while still in sixth form.

Can a Sixth Former Tutor?

Yes. A year 12 or year 13 student with strong GCSE grades can legitimately tutor students in years 7–11 on those same subjects. This is common and widely accepted by parents.

What makes it work:

You will be most credible tutoring 2–3 levels below your current year. A sixth former taking A-Level Maths is well-placed to tutor up to GCSE Maths.

Can a University Student Tutor?

Absolutely. University students are among the most in-demand tutors, particularly for GCSE and A-Level subjects matching their degree. A second-year Chemistry student is a credible A-Level Chemistry tutor.

University students often earn £20–£40/hr tutoring — comparable to or better than most part-time jobs, with fully flexible hours.

Do You Need a Degree or Certification?

No. Tutoring in the UK has no mandatory qualification requirement. Subject knowledge and the ability to explain it clearly are what matter.

Some tutors choose to get a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check, which is not legally required but is strongly recommended for anyone working with under-18s. Many parents will ask about it. A basic DBS check costs £18.

Some organisations like the Tutors’ Association offer voluntary accreditation, but this is optional and most tutors do not hold it.

What Do You Actually Need to Start?

Rates for Younger Tutors

Starting tutors typically charge:

These are appropriate starting rates. Once you have reviews and a track record, you can raise them. Charging too little can actually undermine trust — parents may wonder why you are priced far below the market.
